Fuck It Life Is Short
I don’t think I drank great wine or champagne until I met Kyle, the sommelier and owner of Modest Wine and creator of their multiple wine clubs. Kyle hooked me with a love for champagne, I hadn’t met anyone so excited to share what they know about wine before. My first few times in his shop he was bringing out a map of France and helping me understand why my champagnes had different notes and the impact on the soil. I found myself recognizing notes and producers that I liked in champagne, which I loved, but felt that only drinking champagne was keeping me from gaining the same type of understanding for what I really like in Red’s and White’s too. That is what brought me to the Fuck It Life Is Short subscription. At the time of this writing this is my current wine club subscription that yields me 20 bottles over the course of the year. You’ll get 5 bottles each quarter (usually 3 Reds, 1 White, and a Champagne) yielding 8 more bottles a year than my previous Champagne Club subscription of one Bottle a month. I personally don’t think you need a special occasion to drink a good bottle, let the bottle be the special occasion itself. This is why I love the extra time Kyle takes to feature a fact sheet that introduces the winery, includes tasting notes, and offers food and music pairing suggestions. I’ve found a little extra information can go a long way to create the right atmosphere for appreciating a good bottle and helps me understand why I like some things more than others. A good wine club should help you understand what you like best so you feel confident the next time you are out or looking to buy a bottle for yourself.
Before opening Modest Wine five years ago Kyle was a sommelier in New York City at a 3 Michelin Star restaurant. He became known for having one of the largest and best champagne selections in the city and I happily take that expertise to fill my wine fridge. One of the things I love about Kyle’s selections is how passionate he is about grower bottles, which means the person who farmed the grapes also made the wine. If you are wondering how to know, there is a code on the back label that says RM, récoltant-manipulant: own vineyards, own winery, own label. I love that the bottles I am getting in a wine club could be limited production, and probably something me or my friends (if I am sharing) haven’t tried. The Fuck It Life Is Short wine club is an easy Take My Money. If you find the cost to be prohibitive, be sure to check out some of the other wine clubs that start at $65 a month. You’ll still get tasting notes and all of Kyle’s expertise as you start to discover some new and incredible wines and champagne. I know a lot of people wait for a special occasion to have a great bottle of wine, I prefer to create the occasion by opening the bottle of wine and this wine club allows me to do exactly that. For those of you not in Florida, this can be shipped.
