The box showed up right after I got back from Innisbrook, where I played atrocious golf at the nicest courses I've been to so far. I opened it, felt the three shirts, and put one on before I had unpacked the rest of the trip.
johnnie-O sent three Mediums: the Original 4-Button Polo in Jacks Stripe (Wake), the Performance Featherweight Polo in Huronn (Sublime), and the Performance Jersey Polo in Lyndonn Stripe (Carbon Fiber). The Featherweight and the Performance Jersey are the two hot-weather golf polos. Jacks Stripe is the cotton one. Fit was consistent enough across the three that I would buy another Medium from any of the lines without second-guessing the chart, and nothing grabbed my swing. Jacks Stripe is the Original 4-button with a chest pocket, stretch cotton (they list 95% cotton / 5% spandex), and the Hangin’ Out cut, which they say is two inches shorter so it sits right untucked. That shorter cotton shirt felt like the most fitted of the three. The Featherweight is their lighter performance jersey (they say about 30% lighter than the standard jersey), moisture-wicking, with built-in sun protection they rate UPF 50. The Performance Jersey is the same idea in a slightly heavier cloth, also UPF 50, stretch, easy care.
Jacks Stripe is the one I did not expect to care about this much. Thicker than the two performance polos, which is exactly what I want when Florida finally turns a bit cooler. It is also the shirt I would wear off the course. The Featherweight and the Performance Jersey still read as golf polos. This one does not. Pretty sure I have a new shirt I can wear out on a first date, which is not a sentence I thought I would write about a sample box. Kudos to whoever packed it. The selection was spot on.
I sit here writing this in peak Florida summer, and the Featherweight and Performance polos went in the rotation without a debate. It is a hundred degrees out here, any shirt is going to cling in that. The key thing is that it was more comfortable than others while I was playing, which is the part that actually matters. After taking the Featherweight and the Performance Jersey out for a round, I can confirm I am still playing atrocious golf, and I can also confirm I liked the polos I was wearing while I did it. They moved, they breathed, and they felt like quality the second they came out of the box.
I usually lean quieter on polo patterns. johnnie-O has louder options if that is your lane. What landed here was classic enough to live in my closet and specific enough that I can tell the three shirts apart without looking at the tags. The Featherweight and the Performance Jersey are the ones I reach for on the course while it is still this hot. Jacks Stripe is the one I reach for off the course, and the one I cannot wait to wear more once it cools down.
Johnnie-O is the field leader for golf apparel. There are a lot of golf polos that sit in the ~ $100 range, I wouldn’t regret these as purchases at all. If my game miraculously improves in these next few weeks I’ll have no problem attributing that to the shirts as well.
